The 5 seconds of Summer Times Square Takeover 🎸
We sat down with Senior Director of Marketing Strategy at Republic Records, Lily Bean to break down the 5 Seconds of Summer album release campaign.
Here’s what made it work:
The teaser did the heavy lifting
Mystery posters went up across LA, New York, London, and Sydney with no artist name, just “Your favorite boy band is coming back.” The ambiguity gave people something to talk about before there was anything to officially announce.
The details evolved in real time
The team had been working towards a Times Square performance, something 5SOS had always wanted. The double-decker bus wasn’t the original concept, it replaced a limo idea because it felt more true to New York. That kind of pivot ended up defining the look of the whole activation.
The moment was built to stack
On the day, fans followed the bus from Columbus Circle to Times Square, where the band performed new music before driving off. The commerce team had Spotify and YouTube billboards running during the performance, so the live moment and the platform push were happening in the same place at the same time.
Flexibility was the strategy
Lily describes the real challenge as staying open to changes while still being the person responsible for making everything happen. The campaign didn’t succeed because every detail was locked in from the start. Instead, it succeeded because the team had a clear destination and the flexibility to find the best way to get there
